Everyone Can Do The Five Basic Sewing Machine Maintenance Tasks…even you!
Whichever type of sewing machine you have and whether you sew for pleasure or business, it makes sense to keep your machine in good working order. Not only is your machine an investment but good regular maintenance will result in fewer major problems in the future.
Really there are only five basic maintenance tasks to undertake and if these are taken care of, you will, as they say, be ahead of the game!
1…Open the manual, you know, the one that came with the machine….oh I forgot to say…NOW READ IT! Guess what, the manual will actual list the maintenance suggestions and that would be your starting point.
2…Open all the areas of the machine that you can and keep all the inside cavities spotlessly clean. This will also alert you to loose screws and other potential problems. Keep the inside clean.
3…Use the lint brush that came with your machine every time you sew especially under the throat plate. Dust and lint are the machines worse enemy. You could also use a small vacuum and suck out the dust and lint…don’t use the blow cycle only the suck!
4…Use only the sewing oil recommended in the manual but use it regularly. Use on anything that moves such as gear wheels and spinning rods but obviously keep it away from moving belts. Remember to carefully wipe any excess.
5…Use the screwdriver that came with the machine (check the manual again!) to tighten all the screws you can find. Don’t over tighten but make sure all screws are firmly attached.
Now wasn’t that easy….simple basic maintenance will make sure your machine is always ready to sew when you are and, in the long run, save you on professional sewing machine repairs.

I want to buy a new sewing machine and need some advice. I am a beginner, it will be my first machine…?
… I want it for regular sewing, repairing hems, cuffs, tore jeans, and to learn quilting and some embroidery.
I have been looking some Pfaff, Bernina, and Janome. According to YOUR experience, which machine would you advise me to get? Or what I need to look or paid attention to while choosing a sewing machine? I really want something that can grow with me while I learn more skills. Thanks!
my first machine was a very old Hilton sewing machine that I bought used. You’ve probably never heard of that brand because it is so old the company later turned into the White sewing machine company. Its very difficult to find a home sewing machine that can handle hemming jeans since you have to go through eight layers of fabric to make it over the flat felled seam that goes down the side (4 layers in that seam, plus you roll the hem twice for a clean finish, that’s actually more than eight layers) . My fantasy machine is a Huskavarna Viking, but that runs over $1000. As a beginner, I would go with a Singer. Parts and attachments are regularly available everywhere as is service. Make sure you purchase one with a automatic buttonhole feature. The ones that have a multi-step feature don’t make as nice of a hole. You should be able to find a nice basic machine for under $200

sewing machine repair cost?
Hi, I’m relatively new to sewing (my machine is the Kenmore Mini Ultra) and recently when I was using it, some thread got caught deep inside the machine. Now the handwheel will not rotate anymore. I tried to take it apart to get to the thread but I just don’t know what to unscrew to get to the problem. My question is: how much would it be to take this into a shop and get it fixed and if you would recommend me take it to Sears to get it fixed (does Sears offer a good price quote usually on repairs?).
Thank you!
Know anyone who’s been machine sewing for awhile? Chances are they can show you how to clean the thread and bits of lint out properly. My guess is that you need to pull the needleplate to get to the cause of the problems.
Most repair shops charge a minimum of $50-70 for a basic tuneup, which would include unjamming the machine, which is why I’d suggest you look for someone who is experienced in the routine maintenance that we all wind up doing.
Your machine is a Janome in disguise, btw, so if you decide to go the pro route, I’d look for someone experienced with Janomes.

How do you change the stitch on a kenmore 30 stitch sewing machine?
I was just handed down a Kenmore 30 stitch sewing machine and i took it to get repaired. The machine worked at the repair shop but then i moved and i can’t get the stitch to change, so i was wondering if i’m just doing something wrong.
A little difficult to take it back to the shop when you have relocated.
You need the model number and then you can get a manual for the machine.
Download a manual for $8.00 at this site and save yourself a lot of grief (you are going to need the manual for other features of the machine – http://www.sewconsult.com/kenmore_instruction_manuals.htm
